Why Do Most SAP Implementations So Long To Complete?

by admin on October 28, 2009

Hi,
SAP implementations run for 18-24 months. Peoplesoft implemenations also run for months.
Just why? Why can’t these cycle times be shortened?

Here is my quick answer:
There is a lot to do. You are changing the entire framework of a business usually. Most implementations also must be customized. This is a lot of work as well. Layer on the huge staff, the world-wide release, and the project after project to manage and you get 18-24 months.

ERP Implementations are very rarely out of the box and typically do not replace all existing systems. So the project duration is linked both to the number of bespoke enhancements and interfaces to remaining systems. Additional factors are the experience of the management team, how vested interests are managed, etc.
